—1 Corinthians 12:28
“And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.”
Most positive accomplishments in this world are achieved through a team effort. Whether it is a new product design, a race that is won or a project that impacts the local community, very few things are done alone. Even achievements that we attribute to a single person, such as climbing Mount Everest, involve a team of people supporting the endeavor and working together for the same purposes.
Another example of teamwork at its best is the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. In elementary school, our children are taught the names of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. However, what we tend to forget or even realize is that it took over 400,000 people to make the mission a success.
In most churches today, a few people provide leadership for the entire congregation. These are individuals who bear the entire leadership load required by their ministry and church. Fortunately, God has not just appointed Pastors and a few lay leaders to lead His church. Rather, God has appointed and equipped each of us to work together in order to establish His kingdom on this earth.
When a church decides to work together, nothing is beyond their reach. The vision of the leadership team model here at Riverhills is to give EVERY MEMBER a purpose. We believe that churches lack significance when every member isn’t involved in ministry.
—Romans 12:4-8
4 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
This passage of scripture reveals that God has created us all, not to be separate and disconnected from the church but rather to offer freely the talents He has entrusted to us for the benefit of His Kingdom.
Our belief is that if we as a congregation will work together as “one body” towards a single, clearly defined goal, anything is possible—and everyone shares in the joys and the eternal rewards of our successes.
